By now, many schools are using iPads to create student videos. More than ever before, students are taking ownership of these creative projects, and many students develop a strong passion for digital cinematography and music production. These students are looking for ways to extend their skills, but AV equipment is often complicated and expensive. Even if it can be funded, expense and complexity leads to the need for more adult guidance and less student innovation. In this session, we will explore how to build a simple yet powerful iPad studio for high quality productions that can be used with minimal adult support. We will also discuss how programs such as this overlap with the maker movement both philosophically and in resourcing. And of course, we will learn by doing by making our own high-quality videos and songs.
Please note that this session will take place in the new Creative Suite (BlkA3, just down the stairs from the auditorium.)

Don't have an iPad? Don't worry! Please come - we've got extras.
Music isn't just for the music teacher. Video isn't just for the IT specialist. Media creation is becoming recognized as the most powerful way to engage students and build essential 21st Century skills. This session will include a brief overview of why every teacher should integrate creative media production into their classroom. We will discuss rationale & view examples. We will even have a few minutes to create something for ourselves! No experience necessary. Come experience how exciting the creative learning process can be.
DEEP Dive
Take a look at any modern curriculum or set of standards (e.g. ISTE on the right). What learning experiences can we create for our students to develop these skills? In this session, we will dive in with some media creation projects of our own which demonstrate the power of the iPad to serve as the center of almost any creative media project. Through this hands on session, we will answer the following questions:
Much of the inspiration for this session and GEMS' new Creative Studio comes from innovative projects such as Egmond Boon's (CIS) STEAM initiative in MYP Design. Attend his session as well to learn more about the rationale and pedagogical framework that inspired this session. |
